Color Archive Beach Blanket

Color is relational. Our understanding of a color is influenced by what color it appears alongside. Color, which hinges on the different qualities of light, plays a significant role in shaping our perception of different environments. It shapes our memories and experiences of the world around us.

Over the years, I have amassed an extensive personal image archive of different beaches around Rhode Island. This archive spans years, seasons, and times of day. I revisited these images and extracted the most common colors from each location.

Using a grid based on Irish quilt patterns — common in my Irish-American family and the larger Irish-American population of Southern Rhode Island —I created specific tile designs from the color swatches of each location I wished to represent, bringing them together in one larger piece.
